Community Care

HIWIN remains committed to caring for local communities with a HIWIN presence, contributing what we can to society by devoting Company resources and HIWIN volunteers.

Assisting the Development of Primary Education

Founder of HIWIN Technologies, Global Chairman & CEO, Eric Y.T. Chuo firmly believes that "the poor have nothing, but knowledge is power." As such, HIWIN's endeavors in talent cultivation are not limited to graduate or university students. Giving back to the community and assisting with the development of primary education are also meaningful tasks that require long-term dedication as we fulfill our social responsibilities.

Establishment of Primary School Libraries and Children's Books

In light of the urban-rural gap and the significantly insufficient fundamental educational resources of schools in remote areas, HIWIN carried out inspections with the help of our employees on the equipment, book collections, and even the reading environment of the school libraries in townships home to HIWIN factories. We help schools devise improvement plans for software and hardware upgrade and allocate funds. We also regularly donate books to enrich the library collections annually.

  1. In 2021, HIWIN sponsored NT$3,531,169 in library equipment to Liu-Jia Elementary School in Hsinchu and Cih-Tong Elementary School in Yunlin.
  2. In 2021, HIWIN sponsored NT$399,810 in children's books, newspapers, and magazines to Liu-Jia Elementary School in Hsinchu, Sun-Hope Elementary School in Chiayi, and Cih-Tong Elementary School in Yunlin.

Establishment of Primary School English Courses

Having recognized languages as important tools for active participation in the global community, HIWIN set out to help children build a good foundation for English learning, develop basic English skills, and foster a habit of speaking English naturally. We have been sponsoring Liu-Jia Elementary School in the development and implementation of English courses since September 2010. We have also been sponsoring Cih-Tong Primary School since January 2014. In 2021, we invested a total of NT$8,522,160 to sponsor English courses in primary schools.

STEAM Education Model Base Project

The HIWIN Education Foundation launched the STEAM Education Model Base Project in 2019. The first STEAM classroom was set up in the Chuo Yong-Tong Memorial Library in Liu-Jia Elementary School in Hsinchu, and HIWIN Education Foundation was in charge of the overall planning. The classroom was designed in accordance with the actual needs of a classroom and to be easy to operate. Additionally, the foundation searched for teaching materials suitable for students in different grades in primary school and commissioned professional agencies to conduct STEAM teacher training. The project enables all students in the school to immerse in the abundance of imagination and creativity through STEAM education and find solutions to problems in life through the application of mathematics and science knowledge. In 2020, the Political Deputy Minister of Education, Lio Mon-Chi visited Liu-Jia Elementary School in person to review project outcomes. The executive team of the foundation also reported project highlights to Minister Pan Wen-Chung at the Ministry of Education. Our efforts were highly accredited by the Ministry of Education. HIWIN sponsored NT$561,652 to the STEAM Education Model Base Project in 2021.

Educational Volunteer Services

Since 2016, the HIWIN Volunteer Group has been launching educational volunteer activities focusing on community care. We invite children and families at the social welfare institutions in HIWIN's operating locations to take part. By engaging the children and families of local disadvantaged groups in fun and fulfilling DIY activities, HIWIN encourages parent children participation in educational events.

1.Baking event:

The volunteer group invites children of disadvantaged groups or families to bake cookies or cakes at a charity baking event. Through team practice, children get to enjoy baking and the fulfillment of handmade goods. Meanwhile, they can share the cookies and cakes with their family or friends. By engaging both children and parents of disadvantaged families in educational events, the interaction enhances the parent-child relationship and becomes a way for HIWIN to give back to society with love and action.

Community Care and Social Inclusion

Collaborate with local social welfare organizations through continuous liaison and charity sales.

1.Dumplings for Charity

Each month, HIWIN purchases homemade dumplings made by children at the Shi Fang Special Needs Centers that we serve at HIWIN canteens to support jobs for disadvantaged children and provide an additional income for social welfare groups. We believe this is a great way to feed our employees while supporting a great cause.

2.Mooncake for Charity

Each year, the employee welfare committee reaches out to social welfare groups to purchase mooncakes for the Mid-autumn Festival. In 2021, the employee welfare committee voted and selected four social welfare groups: the Taichung City Association of People of Disabilities, Children Are Us Foundation, Eden Social Welfare Foundation, and Down Syndrome Foundation to support by commissioning a total of 4,659 mooncakes. We hope to play our part in supporting society by providing disadvantaged communities with work opportunities and occupational training opportunities.

Charitable Donation/Charity Sales and Fundraisers

  1. Charity sales light up Children's Day for children at social welfare institutions by supporting their handmade crafts to boost income and provide secure quality of life. In 2021, charity sales raised NT$45,150. The handmade pottery sale for charity in collaboration with Huei-Ming School for Blind Children raised NT$22,900.

A+ Industrial Innovation R&D Program

Since July 2019, HIWIN has been collaborating with the Industrial Technology Research Institute, National Chung Cheng University, National Tsing Hua University, and domestic manufacturers of advanced machine tools on the A+ Industrial Innovation R&D Program. Focusing on R&D on domestically produced intelligent five-axis machine tool critical components, the program aims to develop advanced five-axis machine tools based on autonomous and original technologies. Relying upon a combination of HIWIN's strengths in mechatronics, mass production, and international marketing, the program offers domestically produced five-axis critical components featuring competitive properties in integration, quality, cost-effectiveness, delivery date, and after-sales service, and maintenance. The advancement in machine tools can contribute to the comprehensive upgrade of Taiwan's machine tool industry, making it more competitive in the global market and creating more added value. As of the end of 2021, the program has completed 42 new inventions and 6 utility patent applications.

Equipment Donation in Support of Frontline Firefighting Personnel

Committed to sustainable development, HIWIN enjoys shared prosperity with local authorities and schools where HIWIN has a presence. In 2021, we learned that Chunshe Branch of the Taichung City Fire Bureau was running on outdated scooters and wireless communication gadgets. Chairman Eddie W.H. Chuo of HIWIN Technologies and Chairman Olivia S.Y. Chuo of HIWIN MIKROSYSTEM expressed concern in the matter and sponsored Chunshe Branch's purchase of vehicles and emergency relief wireless communication systems. The gesture also encourages the people of Taiwan to join us in supporting the firefighting and medical personnel that protect Taiwan.

Leading the Industry in Realizing the Vision of Smart Manufacturing

In helping small and medium enterprises in Taiwan realize the vision of smart manufacturing, HIWIN is dedicated to the industrial upgrade and innovative transformation as the leader in the smart automation of the plumbing hardware and hand tool industries using funds awarded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs' technology subsidy program.

HIWIN initiated the Industry Pilot Program of the Ministry of Finance (Pilot Program for short) in 2017. As the program host, President Enid H.C. Tsai led HIWIN's engineering teams to collaborate with Long Tai Copper Corporation, JUSTIME, Re-Dai Precision Tools, and Proxene Tools on the transformation from Industry 1.0 to Industry 3.0 between 2017 and 2020. The program has completed intelligent manufacturing systems for ① grinding and polishing ② tapping ③ contouring ④ reverse scanning ⑤ air tightness testing ⑥ vision inspection ⑦ final inspection, and ⑧ plating. While attracting young people to join the engineering team of intelligent automation, the program also secures orders from major overseas brands. The impact of these four intelligent factories also signifies the endurance of the traditional industry in Taiwan. The implementation process of the Pilot Program was made into a documentary available on YouTube in May 2021. The documentary garnered 47,000 views in the past year.

Donation to Hualien Train Derailment

Anguished by the tragic Taroko express train accident in 2021, HIWIN donated NT$10 million to disaster relief and response work and sent our condolences to the affected, wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded and that families of the deceased can resume normalcy soon. While the entire staff of HIWIN prayed for the affected, we also rooted for all first responders.

Donation for Kaohsiung Chengzhongcheng Building Fire Relief Efforts

At 2 AM on October 14, 2021, a fire broke out at the Chengzhongcheng Building in Kaohsiung City. The fire resulted in 46 deaths and 41 injured, making it the most fatal event in Kaohsiung. HIWIN decided to donate NT$10 million to residents and family members affected by the fire and also inspire other companies to make donations to help those injured with subsequent medical bills and living expenses as well as community reconstruction. We also urged companies to donate to injured victims and families of the deceased to provide economic support.

World Vision Taiwan

As many economies have suffered due to the pandemic, willingness to donate has decreased across all sectors. The parents of many disadvantaged students have lost their jobs and are no longer able to provide for their children's education. HIWIN believes that our children and our youth are the future pillars of our nation and that education is a way to rise out of poverty. As such, we have sponsored disadvantaged children in Yunlin, Chiayi, Taichung, and Changhua, specifically choosing these locations to support communities with a HIWIN presence. In 2021, we sponsored a total of NT$1.11 million, of which NT$150,000 was used to sponsor school registration fees, after-class tutoring, and emergency relief for 40 disadvantaged students.

Buying Locally to Support Local Farmers

China banned pineapple exports from Taiwan in 2021. To cushion the financial impact on pineapple farmers, HIWIN responded to the Chinese National Federation of Industries' call to enterprises to support pineapple farmers by purchasing 200 cartons of pineapples at NT$100,000 from the Yunlin County Yongshin Fruit and Vegetables Cooperative. We shared the amazing local produce with employees at all HIWIN factories.

HIWIN also responded to Yunlin County Mayor Chang Li-Shan's calls to support Yunlin pomelos, purchasing NT$119,000 in pomelos from the Douliu Fruit and Vegetables Cooperative to share with employees at Yunlin Factory and Dapumei Factory. The pomelo purchase also supported local farmers and was a way to practice sustainable development.
